10 Movies That Pissed Off Audiences Right Away

9. Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace

The opening title crawl is one of the most distinctive and exciting aspects of any mainline Star Wars movie, and this was true ten-fold as giddy fans sat down to finally feast their eyes upon Star Wars: The Phantom Menace - arguably the most anticipated film in cinema history.

But that excitement was quickly deflated in the title crawl alone, which rather than focus on establishing a pulpy tone befitting a larger-than-life space opera...thoroughly bored everyone with mentions of "the taxation of trade routes", the Congress of the Republic, "endless debates" and so on.

And though eager fans presumably figured this was just a slight misstep in a movie that was literally too big to fail, the two hours that followed sadly proved otherwise.

If you've ever bothered to rewatch The Phantom Menace, nobody could blame you for skipping the crawl entirely, because it's as dull as dishwater.

On the bright side, though, it perfectly set the tone for a movie that is, for almost its entirety, both underwhelming and weirdly boring.
