It's no secret that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has a license to print money these days, but Marvel Studios does still manage to take occasional financial gambles, which to date have all paid off splendidly.

First there was the punk rock sci-fi comedy Guardians of the Galaxy, which many analysts predicted would be a box office disappointment, only for it to ultimately gross over $100 million more than Justice League.

Then there's Doctor Strange, which daringly introduced magic and mysticism to the MCU, and while a slightly more modest success, Justice League nevertheless won't be able to reach it before the end of its box office run.

And finally, we have Justice League's most direct competition: Thor: Ragnarok, which opened just a few weeks earlier, with most analysts predicting that Justice League's release would slow it down.

As it turned out, Ragnarok stayed the course and blasted past almost all industry expectations, grossing over $200 million more than Thor: The Dark World, and almost as much more than Justice League.

That one of the MCU's lower-tier franchises beat Justice League has reportedly caused "embarrassment" at Warner Bros, and rightly so. Did anyone really care about the Thor franchise until now?
