8. Rope
This was Alfred Hitchcocks first color film but it is far more significant for the method in which Hitchcock shot it. Through a series of ten takes, he made it seem as if the film was taking place in real time with only four obvious cuts. But the film is also notable for its take on the infamous Leopold and Loeb case in which two law students murdered a 14-year-old boy out of a twisted desire to commit the perfect crime. Jimmy Stewarts commanding performance is reason enough to recommend this tense, hypnotic thriller for inclusion. And really, will the registry ever have enough Hitchcock?
