10 Movies That Should Never Have Bombed At The Box Office (But Totally Did)

5. The Lone Ranger

Scott Pilgrim
Disney

The Lone Ranger will likely go down as one of the biggest box office bombs of all time, not just at the time of its release, but in the future too. The chances of a studio and investors giving a director the kind of cash Lone Ranger had is slim to none unless you have Avenger in the title.

The movie was made for approximately $250 million, and it grossed approximately $260 million. However, with marketing costs and the theatre revenue split, the losses on it were eye-watering. Incredibly, production was nearly pulled because of budgetary concerns prior to shooting, so if some wage deferrals and adjustments hadn't been made that budget would have been even higher.

Though the movie was lambasted in certain quarters of the media, it still sports a respectable 6.4 on IMDb from over 200,000 ratings, showing there are plenty of people who enjoyed it. It is in fact a rather enjoyable action-fest, just with a script with as much depth as a puddle.

Director Gore Verbinski had catapulted the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise to box office gold, along with Johnny Depp, so when the two re-teamed on a genre that was underserved in modern times, success should have been all but guaranteed. However, there's just no escaping that mammoth budget.
