10 Movies That Should Never Have Bombed At The Box Office (But Totally Did)

4. Krull

As the world still waits for a remake of one of the greatest 1980s fantasy movies you've never seen, all that's left to do is wonder what in the heck just went wrong originally.

Directed by the Oscar nominated Peter Yates (Bullitt), one might have expected this genre-bending movie to carry the kind of gravitas that would serve it well at the box office. However, with a cast of largely fresh and young faces, there just wasn't much star power to capture the public's imagination at a time when big names made big bucks.

Even for those who really enjoy the movie, there's no getting around the fact that its mishmash of genres must have been completely crazy to audiences in 1983. It's a sci-fi fantasy with elements of swashbuckling that plays like a medieval movie set in space. Though this kind of fusion does provide interesting visuals and settings, it begs the question just who was this movie aimed at?

The budget for Krull ballooned during production with an ever-changing script, making its initial release window more and more important. Sadly, many critics thought Krull was nonsense and audiences agreed, as it grossed a flat $16 million against a budget that was nearly double that.

Avid writer of nonsense. Can often be seen in his natural habitat watching far too many films and not enough TV. Occasionally plays on the Xbox and Megadrive whilst chastising himself for not writing more.
