10 Movies That Show The Dark And Evil Side Of Social Media

8. Trust (2011)

Friends' David Schwimmer takes a somber lurch away from comedy with his directorial effort from 2010, Trust - a considerably unsettling movie about a girl who becomes subject to sexual abuse after meeting a man online in an internet chatroom. Liana Liberato stars as teenage girl Annie Cameron, who becomes so infatuated with her internet crush that she even begins to deceive her parents - played by Clive Owen and Catherine Keener in typically laudable fashion. What's Dark About It? Trust's subject-matter regarding exploitation of the vulnerability of teenage girls is an unsettling theme, and Schwimmer adds a further disturbing layer to the movie by highlighting how evil child abusers hide not only behind web forums, but also behind the ordinary faces of typical middle-aged men. Is It Any Good? Trust is a very commendable effort by all means, and contains some terrific performances as well as some steady direction by Schwimmer. It's bleak and daunting yes, but it's also a maturely-made movie about a highly-disturbing topic, and overall Trust manages to reflect the emotions of guilt, fear, secrecy, and denial without ever crossing over into explicit distastefulness.
