10 Movies That Show The Dark And Evil Side Of Social Media

6. Catfish (2010)

Starting out as a seemingly innocent documentary about how friendships are fused through the internet, Catfish gradually descends into more unsettling territory surrounding social media as it progresses. The movie begins with New York photographer Nev discussing his online relationship with a girl named Abby from Michigan, and steadily creeps from benign chit-chat, to unmistakable bald-faced lies and deceit. After uncovering what he believes to be a web of lies by "Abby", Nev and his brother decide to travel down to Michigan to confront her, which only serves to escalate the absurdity of the whole situation when they meet her family. What's Dark About It? More unsettling than dark, Catfish wades deep into the vague, uncertain waters of the online dating community. Whilst meeting someone over the internet holds potential for a happy ending just like any other, the risks of hanging your emotions on the social media line are there for all to see in this documentary. Some people say that you ought to believe none of what you hear and half of what you see: Catfish proves that that goes doubly for the internet. Is It Any Good? A enthralling little documentary, Catfish is made more intriguing by the perpetual sense of uncertainty that lingers around it. Even now, people are debating whether the whole thing was a hoax, and that the two brothers faked everything themselves - which would certainly add another devious layer to the movie if nothing else. Nevertheless, Catfish deservedly did well, and the film's success even spawned a spin-off TV show; with its fourth season set to air next month on MTV.
