It's fair to say that "overthinking" anything in the world of superheroes is a fool's errand, particularly as it pertains to the consistency of power levels and so on.

But in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there's been one especially contradictory element, and that's the strength of Captain America's (Chris Evans) Vibranium shield.

This comes to a major head in Captain America: Civil War, where we witness Cap using his shield to disable human adversaries without causing any lasting damage, only to then use it to smash through a wall later on.

The obvious retort is that fans probably shouldn't commit too much thought to things like this, or just accept that Cap is a skilled enough soldier to deploy the shield with exactly the force it needs for a given situation.

But considering that we saw Cap literally slicing through the Chitauri with his shield in The Avengers, it doesn't quite track that those he fought in Civil War would still be left in one piece.

The movie does attempt to hang a lampshade on the whole issue by having Spider-Man (Tom Holland) quip to Cap, "That thing doesn't obey the laws of physics at all!," which is pretty much the writers playfully explaining that defining the shield's power is a real headache.
