10 Movies That Take Themselves Way Too Seriously
6. Collateral Beauty (2016)
Will Smith has always liked to make dramas that go deep for the heartstrings, with varying results. Some, like The Pursuit of Happyness, have soared; others, like After Earth and Seven Pounds, have flopped hard.
The same goes for his more recent dud Collateral Beauty, a well-meaning but sentimentally insincere melodrama about a businessman who sinks into depression following the death of his daughter, and subsequently has his career sabotaged by his co-workers.
To his credit, Smith is pretty damn good as a grieving father, but the rest of the film -- from its unlikeable supporting characters, wasted cast, and bizarrely fantastical plot twists -- is too simple in its assessments of loss and mourning to enjoy. It's aiming for profundity, but the way it tortures its central character is far from endearing.
Living proof that a little subtly never hurt anyone, Collateral Beauty is a great film trapped in an aggravating one -- one that for some reason seems to think it's hit the nail on the head.
