When Paramount Pictures released Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, studio executives had plans for this to be the first of a massive film franchise, hoping to be the same size as Harry Potter.
The film was based on the first three books in the series, The Bad Beginning, The Reptile Room and The Wide Window. When released, the film gained positive reviews with many praising Jim Carrey’s performance of Count Olaf, it even won the Academy Award for Best Makeup and was nominated for Best Art Design, Best Costume Design and Best Original Score, from the success of the film a sequel was on the way.
However, due to delays within the company due to a few corporate shake-ups, the three lead actors who played the Baudelaire children grew too much to continue playing children's roles, causing Paramount to scrap the idea of a film series altogether.
Since then, Netflix announced their plans in 2014 for a TV show based on the entire novel series. It has become a worldwide success with Neil Patrick Harris taking on the lead role of Count Olaf.
