When The Mummy was rebooted in 2017 with Tom Cruise playing the lead character, Universal had plans to create a Marvel-style universe called the “Dark Universe” which would see the likes of Dracula, Frankenstein, Creature of the Black Lagoon, Wolf Man etc. all in the same universe.

With the casting of Cruise and the beloved story of The Mummy, Universal Studios thought this would be a massive hit for the Dark Universe after a small kick-off with 2014’s Dracula: Untold.

However, The Mummy would receive worldwide negative reviews and had a disappointing return in the box office. The Mummy 2 and the rest of the Dark Universe would eventually be cancelled.

Universal was also developing a new version of The Invisible Man with Johnny Depp signed on to play the lead character. It was confirmed that The Invisible Man would be a part of the Dark Universe, however, due to the failure of The Mummy and headlines about Johnny Depp and Amber Heard’s divorce the project was scrapped, leaving any hope Universal had for the Dark Universe behind.
