10 Movies That Unbelievably Cut What We Wanted To See
6. Peeves - Harry Potter & The Philosopher's Stone
It's not terribly surprising that much had to be cut from J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter books in order to make them more streamlined and easily digestible for mainstream movie audiences.
However, there's one especially controversial omission frequently called-out by fans, and that's the exclusion of Peeves the Poltergeist, a mischievous comic relief character who, despite contributing little to the series' overarching narrative, was an undeniable fan favourite.
Fans expected to see him in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, but alas, he was disappointingly absent.
It gets worse, though, as scenes featuring Peeves were in fact shot for the film, with the late, great Rik Mayall playing the part, but due to pacing issues, director Chris Columbus cut all of his scenes.
Prior to his death, Mayall talked about the process of being cut from the film, and though there have been murmurs of Columbus releasing a Director's Cut with the scenes restored, to date we still haven't seen a single frame of Mayall as Peeves. That single image floating around online is a fake, by the way.
Returning these scenes to the film would serve the double purpose of bringing another classic element of Potter lore to the big screen and giving fans of the late comic legend one final performance to savour. Get on it, Warner Bros.
