4. Sea Of Love
Way before he took the role of ageing rocker Danny Collins, Al Pacino became a cop investigating a series of murders with a musical connection in Sea Of Love from 1989. Teamed with sexy screen siren Ellen Barkin, the scene was set for a film noir-style erotic thriller from Universal, its plot sweatier than a cat chasing a mouse on hot bricks. The 1950s romantic croonfest of the title played a key part in proceedings, as the sexually-drained, life-deprived victims were found accompanied by the evocative track. A sinister yet classy calling card! While Pacino is one of the all-time great screen actors, the prospect of seeing him get jiggy might not have been to everyone's taste, so good job the classic song featured prominently to sweeten the pill. As for what the soundtrack represented... well, the focus on the city's dating circuit provided a hint that the old adage of "plenty more fish" was being writ large as the movie's theme. The intensive shenangians could have contributed to the legend's decision to change pace - he took on Godfather III soon after!
