10 Movies That Used Insane Gimmicks To Get Attention
3. Monsters Crash The Pajama Party Sends Monsters Into The Theatre
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2crI6OdUOA0The trailers for Monsters Crash the Pajama Party hyped it up as being the "first movie ever filmed in Hollywood's latest miracle, fantastic horror vision!" Okay, what the hell is that?
In this horribly titled B-movie from 1965, a bunch of girls have a slumber party in a haunted house and a mad scientist sends monsters after them. Yep, that's the entire plot. What made it different was that in the final act, actors would dress as monsters and run through the theatre scaring everyone, and there would also be people dressed as the characters from the movie planted in the auditorium. So it was supposed to look like the protagonists were being dragged from the audience into the film itself. The trailer explains that the monsters will "carry screaming girls from their seats right back into the picture!"
The marketing really emphasized that, saying that the monsters will become flesh and blood in front of your very eyes! It's hilarious how the ads can make the idea of guys running around the theatre in gorilla costumes while you're watching a movie sound super exciting. It does call itself the "world's weirdest movie," though, and that part might actually be stunningly accurate.
As a film, Monsters Crash the Pajama Party completely and totally sucks, but as a goofy, Friday night event, it was probably a lot of fun.
