There are few cinematic in-jokes more played-out than the Wilhelm scream - an iconic stock scream sound effect which has been included in films for more than 70 years.

Though initially intended as an inside baseball gag among sound editors, audiences have become increasingly cognisant of the scream over the last few decades, enough that for many it's more of an irritating distraction than a genuinely fun joke.

And so, many couldn't help but roll their eyes when the Wilhelm scream was used in 2018's Venom film, when the Lethal Protector attack's villain Carlton Drake's (Riz Ahmed) S.W.A.T. goons and hurls one of them to their death.

This isn't even a Wilhelm scream that's subtly massaged into a chaotic sound mix - it's louder than everything else to the extent that it's basically impossible to miss.

This invocation of cinema's moldiest joke was widely mocked on social media following the film's theatrical bow, and yet it was quite the surprise to see the Wilhelm scream actually removed from Venom's home video release.

Though nobody associated with the film has ever given an official reason for the scream's removal, clearly someone saw sense and decided it was better off ditching it for the release that most people will end up watching long-term.
