10 Movies That Were Just Trailers For Other Movies

8. Independence Day: Resurgence

The Amazing Spider Man
20th Century Fox

After waiting twenty-some years, Roland Emmerich returned to his blockbuster alien invasion film to craft a follow-up. Sadly, the only hook he seemed to have was "what if everything was bigger?".

Resurgence is a mess of a film that essentially just replicates the exact same story beats from the first film. It is attempting to do for this franchise what Jurassic World or The Force Awakens did for their own respective franchises. But it vastly overestimates how fondly audiences remember the first film.

Among the retreading of old beats, Emmerich spends the entire film planting seeds for another sequel that would have seen Earth join an intergalactic army of other planets to help destroy these evil aliens once and for all. It even ends on a cliffhanger of the remaining characters setting off to do just that.

That sounds like an infinitely more interesting storyline than what audiences actually got, but it's completely squandered. Resurgence flopped at the box office, and now audiences will never even get to see the film that they sat through a two hour trailer for.
