10 Movies That Weren't Meant To Be Sequels
7. The Cloverfield Paradox
That's right. 10 Cloverfield Lane wasn't the only entry in the franchise to receive a makeover.
The Netflix original started as a sci-fi thriller called God Particle, written by Oren Uziel. It was intended for distribution by Insurge Pictures, which specialises in micro-budget features.
When the company went bust, the project became a Paramount film, where it caught the attention of JJ Abrams (again). During production, The Force Awakens filmmaker thought God Particle could be a part of the Cloververse.
Since The Cloverfield Paradox involved a space station, a particle accelerator, and multiple universes, the story had little resemblance to the last two instalments. Although it was assumed Uziel would change the entire plot, the end result was mostly the same, since only a handful of tweaks were made to the script to tether it to Cloverfield's overarching narrative.
Sadly, The Cloverfield Paradox was a total train wreck. The cosmic drama felt like a separate movie with a handful of Cloverfield references crammed in because... that's exactly what it was. Based on how badly The Cloverfield Paradox turned out, it would've been more sensible if it had been left the way it was.
