7. It's Kind Of A Funny Story
As bleak as this movie could be it sidesteps the darkness inherent in films that revolve around mental patients and becomes a celebration of helping yourself and others through difficult times. The protagonist, Craig, could have been a melodramatic mess of a character but instead becomes a likable character who has an air of believability. In movies relating to people facing things like depression believability is key and It's Kind of a Funny Story finds just the right tone between being a serious drama and a light hearted comedy. The story, about a young man who checks himself into a mental hospital for having suicidal tendencies, never bears down on the audience like a strict drama but never makes light of its material like a comedy. This is ultimately why it is so enjoyable. The darkest moments of the film are often highlighted with a heartfelt moment of spontaneous comedy, usually by Zach Galifianakis, that provides the perfect balance for It's Kind of a Funny Story to come off as sincere.
