10 Movies The Critics Were Wrong About

7. National Treasure

Underwater 2020
Disney

Despite being a firm fave among action-adventure aficionados, Nicolas Cage's National Treasure has just 46% on Rotten Tomatoes. A damn sacrilege, it has to be said.

Nobody's going to call the movie high art or suggest it reaches the heights of, say, the Indiana Jones movies, but many critics seemed a little too fixated on the film's knowingly ridiculous plot rather than savouring the vibes of it all.

Yet audience fondness for National Treasure has really only grown over the last 20 years, enough that the recent sans-Cage Disney+ sequel series was received with both vitriol and indifference from the majority of its intended audience.

This film is just a damn hoot and the sort many wish we had more of these days - slickly directed, action-packed, funny, and propelled forward by the chemistry of a great cast.

That Disney never pulled the trigger on a third National Treasure remains truly baffling.
