10 Movies Too Big To Fail (That Did It Anyway)
2. Valentine's Day
Why It Was "Too Big"
Let's not beat about the bush here, Valentine's Day was aimed at ripping off Love Actually's festive spirit by bringing together a huge cast for an anthology of stories interlocking around Valentine's Day. The cast and the aspiration to emulate Love Actually should have been more than enough to guarantee good performances and good audience response.
There's no way the likes of Anne Hathaway, Julia Roberts, Kathy Bates, Bradley Cooper, Jamie Foxx, Shirley MacLaine and Eric Dane could combine to make something terrible, right?
Why It Failed Anyway
Valentine's Day is incredibly bad.
In financial terms, it made enough to be classed as a bit of a success, but it's the critical response that matters here. While Love Actually is pretty universally adored for its charming heart and self-conscious schmaltz (it is made by Richard Curtis after all), Valentine's Day is charmless and vapid. Hence it getting 18% on RottenTomatoes.
The Damage
Well, the biggest damage came to audiences, who were forced to watch the other two movies Gary Marshall made in his unofficial holiday trilogy - New Year's Eve and Mother's Day. Some wounds will never heal.
