10 Movies Totally Changed For Overseas Audiences
6. Skyfall Didn't Have A Chinese Backstory In China
Given the treatment of anyone with a vaguely Eastern European accent in its early films, the James Bond franchise is notorious for its lack of tact when it comes to respecting other cultures.
This reputation certainly didn't help Daniel Craig's third Bond outing Skyfall, which fell foul of Chinese censors upon its release in 2012.
In order to it to be released, the studio were forced to remove almost all references to China. This included a scene where a Chinese security guard was shot by a hitman and any mentions of villain Raoul Silva's torture at the hands of the Chinese authorities.
However, by far the most important change was the removal of the heavily criticised side plot involving the former child prostitute Sévérine who Bond encounters in a Macau casino.
In the Chinese release, her backstory is altered to reflect an unspecified murky history with the mob. That actually greatly improved the subsequent scene where Bond seduces her with dubious levels of consent.
