7. It Makes A Love Story Out Of Sexual Assault - Blade Runner 2049

Blade Runner 2049 is one of the greatest films of the last decade, but also unavoidably saddled with the baggage of being a sequel to a film which harbours some rather problematic sexual politics.

Despite being widely acclaimed as one of the best sci-fi films of all time, Ridley Scott's original remains controversial for the scene in which Deckard (Harrison Ford) forces himself upon replicant Rachael (Sean Young), which is in the very least an act of coercion if not flat-out rape.

In the context of the first film's self-contained story, this is entirely in line with Deckard's established character and attitude towards replicants.

But Blade Runner 2049 makes an eyebrow-raising attempt to re-frame this relationship as an entirely loving one, even resulting in the birth of their daughter, yet the foundation of that relationship was clearly not consensual.

This isn't to say that Rachael didn't eventually fall in love with Deckard, but even if we assume that to be correct, it opens up a dialogue about what that love can possibly mean if it blossomed from a coerced sex act.
