10 Movies Way Freakier Than You Thought

6. Lucy's Amnesiac Pregnancy - 50 First Dates

The Truman Show Jim Carrey
Columbia Pictures

On the surface, 50 First Dates is a sweet rom-com starring Adam Sandler as Henry Roth, a man attempting to court Lucy Whitmore (Drew Barrymore), an amnesiac who is unable to create new memories since a car accident a year prior.

The bulk of the movie is focused on Henry's efforts to navigate this major romantic hurdle, eventually deciding to play Lucy a video tape every morning which brings her up to speed on what's happened in her life since the accident.

At the end of the film, the tape reveals that the two are now married, and after leaving her room, Lucy learns that they also have a young daughter.

A surface-skimming reading of the film might paint this as a cute ending to an absurdly-premised movie, but it's actually completely terrifying when you dig into it.

First and foremost, can you even imagine waking up with a random, massive baby bump and apparently having to remain calm enough to watch a VHS explaining everything away?

That's not to ignore the tremendous burden of Henry having to explain the increasing glut of events in Lucy's life as she ages. And what about if Henry dies, or when their daughter eventually leaves to live her own life?

Basically the end of this film is a tangled web of existentially terrifying scenarios, so you're probably better off just shoveling the popcorn in your gob and smiling as the movie stars get their "happy" ending.
