10 Movies We Desperately Wanted To Happen (But Never Will)
6. Newt
Newt had the backing of Pixar, and came just before the studio experienced their uncharacteristic dip in form. Though Pixar have been coy on the reasons why Newt was pulled out of production, there are a few clues to be found.
First off though, it’s clear they were definitely serious about it. Pixar famously leave clues in their movies to upcoming projects, and in the background of Toy Story 3 you can see a sign which reads ‘Newt Crossing’.
The movie was set to star two blue footed Newts, the last two of their kind, and was allegedly an extinction/conservation parable told through the power of working together. The underlying themes bore considerable resemblance to Dreamworks’ Rio, causing many to speculate whether this was the reason for its 2012 cancellation.
Pixar’s own story though is slightly different. The original director of Newt was Gary Rydstrom, who had previously only helmed shorts, making Hawaiian Vacation for Pixar. Some time during the process, control was shifted to Pete Docter, the director of Up & Monsters, Inc.
Docter pitched a second idea to Pixar while getting to grips with Newt, and was encouraged to pursue that instead; this idea eventually became Inside Out, while Brave replaced Newt on the Pixar roster.
