1. Armageddon
I selected this movie as number one because it is one movie that both women and men cry at consistently. A crew of average, blue collar workers are recruited to save the world from an asteroid the size of Texas that, if it hits the Earth, will obliterate the planet and all of its inhabitants. Each crew member has their own lives to take into consideration when faced with the damning truth. Who will mourn them if they dont come back? What are the chances that they will come back? Are they selfless enough to sacrifice their own lives for the rest of humanity? The answer is yes. The crew trains, takes off, faces fatal complications, and at the end of the movie, we say goodbye to their leader as he uses his last few seconds alive to say goodbye to his daughter. Nothing will make people cry more than the probability of catastrophe. No one wants to know that the NASA budget only provides enough money to examine 3% of the sky at one time. No one wants to know that there could be a huge asteroid aimed at our planet right now that we dont even know about yet. On top of not knowing, Bruce Willis sacrifice at the end makes the pride lump rise in our throat - knowing that we wouldnt be that strong to sacrifice ourselves for the greater good. I dont doubt that many of us would say we would, but to stand on that rock and press that button as your only way to get home sails away into the black abyss of stars and space debris is completely different. Saying and doing are two different things, my mother taught me that. I have not had one boyfriend who can get through Armageddon without crying - even if its just tears welling up and escaping the eyelid (I count that as crying). We knew this would make us cry because there is always an immaculate sacrifice in these movies. There is always one person that doesnt come back, maybe more. The inability to leave as a group and come back as a group gives audiences an idea of what they are in store for, but the beauty of the dialogue and images is what keeps them crying. How did we do? What is your favorite sad movie that gets the tears flowing? Let us know in the comments below!
