10. What Dreams May Come
A very talented doctor dies tragically, leaving his family to fall apart without him. We follow his adventures in the afterlife, meeting all of those who had passed before him, where he learns that his wife commits suicide in the wake of his death. Because she has committed suicide, she is sent to hell, damned to spend her afterlife in the misery that befell the last few days of her mortality. Our hero makes it his mission to rescue her from torment, risking his own peaceful journey through heaven, in a very Orpheus rescues Eurydice kind of story. We knew the second we saw the trailer that this movie was going to make us cry. No one wants to die, but no one really wants to outlive the love of their life either. We can only imagine the pain that drives others to take their own lives, but this movie allows us to witness it, first hand. I think another aspect that makes this movie so sad is that it is starring the ever hilarious Robin Williams, known for his goofy humor and crazy antics. His being placed in a tragic plot makes us realize that you can only joke about the severity of death to a point before even the funniest of comedians is forced to make rational and heartbreaking decisions.
