2009's weepie drama My Sister's Keeper is based on Jodi Picoult's hit novel about a young girl, Anna (Abigail Breslin), who was born simply to provide her grimly ill older sister Kate (Sofia Vassilieva) with organ and blood donations.

Upon learning that her parents wish for her to donate a kidney to her sister, Anna sues for medical emancipation, not wishing to have her future life restricted by the use of just a single kidney.

And the film proved massively controversial with fans of the book because of writer-director Nick Cassavetes' decision to change the ending.

In the book, Anna wins her case but dies in a car accident and her organs are donated to her sister regardless, saving her life.

But having visited terminally ill patients while researching the project, Cassavetes surmised that, "In reality, none of these stories ended like the book did."

Instead, the film ends with the reveal that Anna's refusal was actually at the encouragement of Kate herself, who didn't want her sister's life to be impacted by the donation, and she simply ends up dying of her disease at the end of the movie.

Though fans continue to complain about Cassavetes "butchering" the novel to this day, he was absolutely right to make the change. The source material's ending was maudlin and ridiculous, while the film's was more dignified and believable.
