10 Movies Where The Hero Should've Died

6. Martin Riggs - Lethal Weapon 2

Star Wars
Warner Bros.

That's right. We got another entry with Mel Gibson. (What's with the guy playing heroes that should've died?)

In Lethal Weapon 2's final showdown, Riggs and Murtaugh track down a corrupt consul called Rudd. After Riggs takes out Rudd's lead henchmen, the ruthless consul shoots him.

Now, it's not certain how many bullets Riggs is plugged with, but since Rudd emptied his entire clip on him, it's safe to say it's a lot. After Murtaugh shoots Rudd dead, he rushes to his partner, telling him he's going to pull through. Due to the sombre tone and the way Riggs is gasping for air, it genuinely looks like Mel Gibson's character is about to pop his clogs.

But within less than a minute, Riggs starts cracking jokes, reassuring his partner that he's fine.

However, Riggs' recovery seems jarring. Because of the melancholic music and the fact that he looked like he was at death's door, viewers really thought he was as good as dead.

Screenwriter, Shane Black, genuinely toyed with the idea of killing off Riggs, but had a change of heart at the last minute (probably when he realised he could make more money with the sequels).

Even though Lethal Weapon 3 and 4 have their moments, these instalments feel like more of the same. In hindsight, it would've been better, and more impactful if the series concluded with Lethal Weapon 2, with Riggs checking out at the end.
