10 Movies Where The Hero Turns Evil In The Sequel

4. Jean Grey - X-Men: The Last Stand

If you ever think about that flashback scene from X-Men: The Last Stand, it's probably for the wrong reason. The de-aging on Charles Xavier was genuinely awful, even in the context of the time, and it's no surprise this image overshadowed the fact that this scene was about Jean Grey.

Jean had been a key member of the X-Men for two whole movies, but it wasn't until this moment that the true extent of her powers was explained. She was a Class Five mutant, which essentially made her one of the most powerful people on the entire planet.

It's all well and good having such a heavy hitter fighting by your side, but what about when she is overtaken by the Dark Phoenix Force within her? Jean's mind became corrupted before she joined forces with Magneto, wreaking havoc throughout the X-Men threequel. Such was the threat she posed, Wolverine had to kill the woman he loved.

This story was similar 13 years later as X-Men: Dark Phoenix rehashed the same tale, but with Jessica Chastain involved as an emotionless alien. Even after this, Jean was still a fixture at Professor X's school when Wolverine returned to the present from his escapades in Days of Future Past, so at least (somehow) she was able to overcome the Dark Phoenix eventually.
