10 Movies Where The Villain Deserved To Win

7. Hans Gruber - Die Hard

Law Abiding Citizen
20th Century Fox

This one really depends on your definition of ‘deserves’. Obviously Hans Gruber is a black and white bad guy; a German terrorist who takes civilians hostage. No one’s arguing that he’s actually in right, or that squinting makes him look better with a bit of hindsight.

However, ignoring his motives and goals, just think of all the hard work that went into planning Nakotomi Plaza. Did it fall apart because of ineptitude? Betrayal? Hubris? A Death Star back hatch esque overlooked weakness? No, none of that. It all fell apart because of John McClane.

Bruce Willis’ McClane is one of the greatest action stars in movie history, but let’s be honest, he’s way too OP. He’s unstoppable in Die Hard, outthinking, outmuscling and despite being just one man, often seemingly outnumbering the terrorist cell.

At any other time, Gruber’s plan would’ve went off without a hitch. Were it not for McClane, he would have pulled off one of the slickest, smoothest heists ever.

Though again, he’s very clearly the villain of the piece, with no admirable or understandable goals. Had he won, it wouldn’t have made for a great movie. A+ for effort, but unfortunately he plummets to an F overall.
