10 Movies With INSANE Budgets (That Didn't Pay Off)

6. Jack The Giant Slayer

The Lone Ranger
Warner Bros.

Jack the Giant Slayer was another film made from a popular story that has seen a few adaptations over the years. Typically, fantasy retellings of British Fairy tales are hit or miss with a modern audience, and this project ended up being the latter.

The movie was directed by Bryan Singer, who usually makes great movies, but even he couldn't take this project and make it work. With a cast including Nicholas Hoult, Eleanor Tomlinson, Stanley Tucci, Bill Nighy, Ewan McGregor, and Ian McShane, it really should have done well, but the critic response was mixed leading to a rating of 52% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Despite mixed reviews, this movie should have worked, and it did manage to pull in just shy of $198 million at the box office. The problem comes with its budget, which ended up costing Warner Bros. Pictures $220 million to complete the film. That budget was just way too high, and even though the movie demanded a lot of post-production effects work, that cost is why the movie failed.

The original budget of $195 million might have meant it would have broken even, but thanks to a large number of reshoots, inflated marketing costs, and post-production effects work, the movie's cost was just too high to make any real money.
