10 Movies With INSANE Budgets (That Didn't Pay Off)

5. Green Lantern

These days, comic book movies are usually cash cows thanks to the amazing amount of work that goes on behind the scenes to make them successful. While most of the movies in the genre belong to Marvel Studios, that doesn't mean DC hasn't made its fair share of comic book films as well.

Unfortunately, a lot of what DC has made in the past few years haven't gone on to earn a lot of money at the very least, they haven't made what the studio expected. Green Lantern is one such movie, and while it was intended to launch a franchise, all it managed to do was crash the DCEU movie plans for a number of years.

Ryan Reynolds' first major comic book film was panned by critics and fans alike who disliked a wide number of choices made in the design of the film. The animated suit, goofy premise, and the changes made to the characters didn't go over well with a dedicated fanbase, and it showed at the box office.

Green Lantern only managed to make $219 million, which is certainly a lot of money, but given the $200 million budget and additional marketing costs, that was nowhere near what DC needed to launch its new live-action film universe. Green Lantern suffered from way too many effects, which inflated the budget beyond reason resulting in a massive loss for the studio.
