7. Everything's Pre-Destined So Don't Worry About It - Slumdog Millionaire
Few will argue with the opinion that Slumdog Millionaire is a great film, though part of its overall moral message does strike me as a bit disagreeable. The movie revolves around young Jamal (Dev Patel), who ends up tortured by Indian police who believe he cheated on Who Wants to Be A Millionaire, when it in fact turns out that Jamal was lucky enough to know all of the answers from life experience. From the final words on the screen, "It is written", the film's philosophy is clearly that Jamal never had to do anything because destiny was always going to throw himself and Latika (Freida Pinto) together. This completely denies Jamal agency, and seems to say that as everything's already planned out anyway, there's no point even trying to fight the future. It becomes a whole lot dodgier when you think about how this plays into class attitudes in India; don't ever try to escape your circumstances, because you're probably destined to stay here for the rest of your life, and if not, it'll just happen outside of your control.
