1. The Hunger Games
There have been bad adaptations of literary works. There have been good adaptations of literary works. Then there is The Hunger Games. So intent on making a shot-for-shot adaptation of the words from the book was this adaptation that the film never captured the emotion, theme, or tone, not to mention character, suspense, or depth of its source material. It just gave us the empty, bland pictures that hoped readers of the book would fill the gaps of subtext and meaning, while newbies would say it worked because they had no idea what they were supposed to be looking for anyway. The Hunger Games never captured The Hunger Games, and while fans might never admit it, very little stood out from the film to make it even the least bit exceptional. Don't get me wrong: the books are great and the movie is not terrible. I can't wait for the next film, with a new director and writers we should actually see the rawness that made The Hunger Games the Hunger Games. But I just cannot convince myself to sit down and re-watch the first film. Not yet, anyway.
