10 Movies You Didn't Know Were Connected
1. Lost In Translation And Her
These two films aren't connected by a character or a universe, but by a real-life experience.
Sofia Coppola and Spike Jonze, the directors of Lost in Translation and Her respectively, used to be married. They divorced in 2003 and would both go onto explore their failed relationship in these two movies.
Lost in Translation came out the year of the divorce and drew on Coppola's own experiences of feeling lost in a relationship whilst in her twenties. The director manifests herself as Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson), a young woman who struggles with feeling isolated because of her marriage.
Solitude is also present in Her, which follows Theodore Twombly (Joaquin Phoenix) and his relationship with a sentient AI (also Johansson). Both movies are about unusual relationships - Charlotte's with an older man (Bill Murray) and Theodore's with his AI - and how they offer joy against the bleak backdrop of so-called "normality".
Both are absolutely fantastic films and complement each other beautifully. They offer a quite chilling insight into the mental states of both parties during the marriage and send a stark warning that love on its own might not be enough to make a person feel whole.
