10 Movies You Had No Idea They Remade
6. Unforgiven
Clint Eastwood's Best Picture-winning Western Unforgiven is one of the genre's finest entries - a virtually peerless reinvention of the Western myth, anchored by incredible performances from Eastwood, Gene Hackman, Morgan Freeman, and Richard Harris.
Unforgiven seemed like such a towering achievement that it'd be foolish to ever consider remaking it, but the decision to reimagine it within a Japanese setting - specifically the Hokkaido frontier during the early Meiji period - was nothing if not inspired. And while 2013's Unforgiven doesn't get close to the taut brilliance of Eastwood's film, it is a respectful remake which benefits enormously from both its changed setting and culture, and Ken Watanabe's terrific performance in the Eastwood role.
It follows the plot of the 1992 film incredibly closely, but the sets and locations lend this remake a wholly different feel, even if it could never be called an "essential" retelling. And that's probably why it came and went without making much of a dent a decade ago - it's a solid remake of an all-timer movie that nobody wanted to be remade.
