10 Movies You Had No Idea Were Based On Comic Books

7. 300

300-poster 300 is a great piece of historically inaccurate, macho posturing with a boring side-plot of politricks. But man oh man are the visual presentation and battle scenes a blast! Released in 2007, the film was a commercial (if not critical) success that takes a historical-fantasy approach to the Battle of Thermopylae, as the story resolves around King Leonidas leading 300 Spartans into battle against 300,000 Persians. Presented in an ominous manner, with light often being heavily contrasted and certain sequences being desaturated or tinted to establish the mood, the entire process gave the film a real 'comic book brought to life' feel and is a pure visual experience. The comic 300 was based on stands out as a real accomplishment in graphic novel circles, with each page being illustrated as a double-page spread and the page sizes being twice the size of your a-typical graphic novel, resulting in writer and illustrator Frank Miller winning a slew of Eisner Awards upon its publication in 1999. It says something for the reverence director Zack Snyder held the source material and its creator, as when filming 300 he not only hired Frank Miller as an Executive Producer and consultant but even photocopied panels from the comic book from which he planned the preceding and succeeding shots, meaning it is as close to a shot-for-shot adaptation of a comic book as you will find.
