10 Movies You Never Expected To Have A Happy Ending

1. The Exorcist

The Exorcist head spin
Warner Bros.

For a long time, The Exorcist was hyped up as the scariest movie ever made. Is that label justified now? Well, as excellent as the movie is, not necessarily. There's an argument that this label misrepresents what this movie is really like.

First up, this movie is more disturbing than scary in the traditional sense, and secondly, what makes The Exorcist great is that it isn't really about the scares. Rather, it's more of a drama about faith that happens to contain horror elements. The author of the original novel, William Peter Blatty, penned the book in response to a spiritual crisis he was undergoing, and what will surprise first-time viewers is that the movie is ultimately quite a hopeful one.

The little girl possessed by the demon is successfully exorcized, and she and her mother are able to move on. Even though the priests that exorcize Regan tragically die, this is given a positive edge by Father Damien Harris' ending. Having regained his faith, he makes a heroic sacrifice to save Regan, and so his death is not in vain.  However many unwanted Exorcist sequels get inflicted upon us, this right here is a beautiful ending to the story.

Despite how controversial and infamous The Exorcist undeniably is, it's actually quite an uplifting film in its own little way, and that's one of the many things that make it so special.
