10 Movies You Only Like Because Everybody Else Does

2. Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986)

Is this blasphemy? Is this what it feels like to commit a true crime against the medium of cinema? It certainly feels like it. But one cannot escape the feeling that Ferris Bueller's Day Off, that John Hughes classic starring Matthew Broderick, really belongs on this list.

Though it might seem inherently ill-judged to include a movie with incalculable appeal in an article accusing movie-goers of simply liking a bunch of films for the sake of it, Ferris Bueller's Day Off has always felt like such a self-consciously "cool" movie. You get the sense that people love to say that they adore Ferris Bueller's Day Off because they feel like that's expected of them. The movie itself is fine, kind of entertaining, but nothing special.

The reason Ferris Bueller's Day Off fails as a film is because of Ferris Bueller himself; he's an unlikeable douchebag, content to manipulate his relatives and friends in order to have a good time. It has never made sense as to why he's deemed so popular. Just like this film. We've clearly reached a point at which people feel like they can't say a bad word against this particularly beloved comedy. But haven't you always secretly felt it's a bit.. overrated?
