10 Movies You Only Like Because Everybody Else Does

1. The Godfather (1972)

Everyone's favourite film, apparently, and yet isn't there something not quite right about the universal adoration of The Godfather? Doesn't it feel like too much, given the actual film?

Now, it would be crazy to suggest that Francis Ford Coppola's film isn't at all good, because there are parts of The Godfather that are truly great; moments of brilliance and flashes of genius scattered throughout. Not to mention the performances, most of which - namely in Al Pacino and Marlon Brando - are truly brilliant. That said, the movie also has plenty of flaws: it's slow, it's not always interesting, and it's actually rather difficult to follow narratively.

There is a sense that it's impossible to argue that The Godfather is anything but perfection, but for a lot of of people it stands as one of those "great" movie which they find difficult to "get" - emotionally, it refuses to click. Still, that doesn't seem to stop the same people from declaring The Godfather to be a masterpiece of cinema anyway, because it has amassed such a reputation (and is so darn beloved) that nobody really wants to say otherwise.

For all those folk who can't quite understand the appeal, rejoice in the fact that you're not really wrong in your opinion: you're not getting it because there's arguably not as much to "get" as you've been led to believe. Those who have been groomed to praise The Godfather are clearly barking up the wrong tree; it's Part II that is the real masterpiece, after all.
