10 Movies You Only Like Because Everybody Else Does

4. The Departed (2006)

"It's the best remake of all-time!" is something that you'll often hear about The Departed, which is an American remake of the popular Hong Kong thriller Infernal Affairs.

And whilst the general population tend to agree with this sentiment, a single viewing of Infernal Affairs is enough to prove that that's really not the case. Maybe it's because The Departed was directed by Martin Scorsese, or because it features Leonardo DiCaprio in a lead role, but the hype surrounding this film has never felt deserved. It's a serviceable remake, but a seriously self-conscious one; you can just feel it clawing for Oscar glory.

Despite the hammy performances and awkward dialogue cues (of which people rarely speak of), The Departed is an average film masquerading as a masterpiece; the cinematic equivalent of mutton dressed as lamb. The reason for its popularity assumedly stems from the amount of prestige associated with it - big name actors and an iconic director. So you like this one because you feel like you should; all the elements are seemingly in place.

Unfortunately, said elements don't really come together and The Departed ends up coming off as a bit of a mess (and it's way, way too long - why so few complaints of boredom?).
