10 Movies You Totally Didn't Realise Were Racist

9. Pitch Perfect (And Pitch Perfect 2)

The Pitch Perfect films were rightfully praised for their progressive treatment of female friendships and for having a cast and production team dominated by women, still a rarity in Hollywood. But amid the pop-y dance numbers and undercooked romantic plots is a lot of extremely casual racism, which is always played for laughs. The first film's portrayal of the only Bella of Asian-background as nearly silent and very weird wasn't great, but the second film went much further by introducing a character from Guatemala purely for the purposes of making terrible, offensive jokes about Central America (and developing countries generally). And actually, "jokes" might be overselling it. They're mostly just throw away lines about drug trafficking. Not great, Bellas.
