10 Movies You Totally Forgot Had Sequels

5. Look What's Happened To Rosemary's Baby (1976)

Rosemary’s Baby is by the far the most intelligent horror movie ever put to screen, not only for being thematically rich in its exploration of evil, secrecy, religion, gender roles and sexuality but also for the clever use of metaphors and symbolism to drive its weighty subject matters. The opening lullaby, sang by Mia Farrow herself, instantly sets the eerie mood and foreshadows what is to become of the story – a spiralling path into peril.

The story goes as the Woodhouse couple, Rosemary and Guy, move in to an upmarket apartment but what seems like the right decision at the time soon becomes regrettable as they are encounter peculiar neighbours, unknowing they are living in a building with a history of satanism. After becoming mysteriously pregnant, the safety of her unborn child takes over her mind and she slowly descends into madness. Polanski’s direction of the horror flick allows for plenty of ambiguity, particularly in the conclusion of the film. From an audience perspective, we are frequently asking the question of whether Rosemary’s concerns are justified. An even bigger question, about the ending, is whether she accepted the role of the monster’s mother or not?

But I digress. All of this would suggest that due to the density and mature nature of Rosemary’s Baby, it wouldn’t need some type of follow up and part of its beauty would be because it’s forever left as a standalone movie which can always be open for discussion and interpretation.

Unfortunately, a gratuitous sequel did come about in 1976 and diminishes any curiosity looming about the first movie. Look What Happened to Rosemary’s Baby is as drivel as it sounds – the haunting atmosphere is lost, the aesthetics are ugly, the acting performances are subpar and the story has no flair. It’s just a wonder how they managed to get Ruth Gordon to reprise her role for this shameful movie.
