10 Movies You Totally Forgot Had Sequels
3. Book Of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 (2000)
In order to truly appreciate The Blair Witch Project, you had to be around for the time it was first released. Thanks to the marketing strategies, the actors were depicted as real-life people who were missing and the cast was made up of actors who didn’t have any other prior film credits to their name. The movie has a loose script and relies mostly on improvisation to make the conversations flow as naturally as possible – the tensions felt real and the stakes were raised because of the conflicts. Furthermore, the filming techniques are deliberately done amateurly to really make you believe you’re looking at found footage from an old camera.
From a modern perspective, some elements of the movie have aged quite poorly especially since it’s well known enough that The Blair Witch Project is just fiction. The characters gaslighting each other and the objectification of women also doesn't fly in this day and age.
What has remained a strong feature for the original movie is the atmosphere it created – the fear of the unknown and how it forced the viewers to use their imagination of what The Blair Witch looked like. There have been countless movies trying to recreate the very same suspense but all have failed, including The Book of Shadows which came out just one year later after the original.
Regardless of your feelings toward the film, we can all agree it should have been left as a standalone. The Book of Shadows sequel is largely forgotten because it didn’t have near enough the same impact as the original. It almost becomes a parody of the first movie as the conflicts are vapid and flat as well as the filming techniques looking too neat to make the ensemble’s journey through the woods seem like an organic experience. It’s all too manufactured and doesn’t challenge you psychologically like the first did.
