7. A Direct Sequel To Prometheus - Alien: Covenant

Though Alien prequel Prometheus was met with a polarised response from fans, there was nevertheless considerable interest in seeing its sequel-baiting ending followed up in the next movie.

But due to outcry about the film's confusing lore and lack of Xenomorphs, Ridley Scott decided to scrap most plans for a straight sequel and instead deliver a film which skewed closer to the core Alien franchise.

As such, Alien: Covenant ditched Prometheus' protagonist Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace) and kicked off a new adventure with an almost entirely new cast, save for the brilliant Michael Fassbender as android "brothers" David and Walter.

Ultimately Shaw was given a hugely unsatisfying off-screen death, Prometheus' Engineer plot was literally nuked out of existence, the movie was filled with stupid human characters, and the presence of the Xenomorph in the third act felt totally tacked-on.

Clearly, Ridley Scott saw the fallout of Prometheus and assumed that fans simply wanted another also-ran Alien movie, and that's exactly what he gave them.

But what most fans really wanted was a straight continuation of Prometheus which focused on Shaw exploring the Engineer homeworld with David, and getting to the bottom of why they turned on humanity.

It didn't need any Xenomorphs at all, and could've been a brilliantly suspenseful two-hander between Shaw and David as they encountered both the Engineers and other creatures indigenous to their world.

Instead, we got a generic slasher movie saved only by Fassbender's entertaining dual performance.
