Despite what sexists might tell you, the problem with 2016's Ghostbusters was never inherently that it "gender-swapped" the focal team-up, but simply that it strayed too far from the franchise's core essence.

For starters, the third film was inexplicably granted a $144 million budget - more than double the combined cost of the two previous films - and misguidedly decided to fashion itself as a reboot rather than a continuity sequel.

As such, the original Ghostbusters could only make cutesy cameo appearances as random new characters, whereas if the film had been a sequel to Ghostbusters II, the original line-up could've played their iconic roles and effectively passed the torch to this new generation.

But perhaps the movie's biggest sin is its production style, with writer-director Paul Feig relying heavily on improvisation to spice up the basic script, as is quite evident where even the funniest gags are stretched out to unbearable length.

Ghostbusters 2016 should've been Ghostbusters III with a $75 million budget, significant supporting roles for Bill Murray et. al, and a director whose filmmaking style better suited the tone of the existing franchise.
