10 Movies You Won't Believe Are Turning 20 In 2025
1. King Kong
These days, thanks to his rivalry with Godzilla in Legendary Pictures' MonsterVerse, King Kong is as relevant in the mainstream as he has ever been. Since Kong: Skull Island in 2017, the giant ape has appeared in both Godzilla Vs Kong and Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire, and will return once again in an as-of-yet untitled sequel to the latter.
20 years ago in 2005 however, it had been almost another 20 years since King Kong graced the screens in John Guillermin's King Kong Lives. Needless to say that the anticipation was through the roof for his return, and it was a game changer.
There have been plenty of fair criticisms thrown at the film since its release, among others its overblown run-time, but Peter Jackson's epic was still just that. Epic. Kong was portrayed by computer animation and motion capture for the first time, thanks to Andy Serkis who would go on to play Caesar in the Planet of the Apes trilogy, and he was damn-near flawless.
The human-side of the picture left a lot to be desired, but does anyone go into such a film caring about much other than seeing a giant monkey run riot? This, King Kong had in abundance, along with a more realistic-looking Kong than anyone had ever dreamed of seeing before.
