Elizabeth Taylor was a queen of the silver screen and one half of acting royalty when she married to the late, great Richard Burton. She was best known for being one of Hollywood’s iconic female actors in the 50s and 60s with lead roles in films such as Cleopatra, Cat On A Hot Tin Roof and Suddenly, Last Summer.

In 1965, Taylor starred alongside her then husband Burton in The Sandpiper, an American Drama film about a single mother who falls in love with a religious school headmaster in California. That particular film, though typical for Burton and Taylor, was largely forgotten after its release.

Part of this was because it made during a very turbulent time of Taylor and Burton’s marriage; their onscreen chemistry just wasn’t what it used to be. One year later, though, Burton and Taylor starred in Who’s Afraid Of Virginia Woolf?, a comedy about a failing marriage.

In this film, Elizabeth Taylor was nearly unrecognizable. In her past films, make-up artists had always been kind to Taylor by making her look as beautiful as she can be.

However, Taylor gained 30 pounds for this role and was made up to look frumpy and older than she actually was. It suited the role perfectly and her loudmouthed, 'fishwife' performance made it the greatest role of Taylor's career, and the film is still regarded as one of the greatest ever made to this day.
