James Gunn will always be a strange and controversial name in the world of cinema. His history with Troma in the 90s could have stained his whole career, but Gunn found a way to move forward and has now become a major name when it comes to superhero movies. This all began when Disney took a chance with Gunn and allowed him to write and direct a Guardians Of The Galaxy adaptation.

However, taken in context with Gunn’s career development, this was a very strange decision on Disney’s behalf. One year earlier, in 2013, Gunn contributed to what may be the worst anthology film ever made: Movie 43. A tasteless gross-out comedy similar to Kentucky Fried Movie, Movie 43 is best known for being made as a bet and starring a cavalcade of A list celebrities. Gunn wrote and directed a segment called Beezel which was about a gay animated cat who has a weird sexual obsession with its owner.

Beezel is as tasteless as it gets, harking back to cartoons such as Ren & Stimpy, but to go from this to a family friendly superhero film backed by one of the biggest companies in the world is massive career leap. The fact that Gunn delivered when it came to the quality of Guardians Of The Galaxy is highly impressive considering where he started in the industry and his distinct lack of experience in the superhero genre.
