The great thing about movies is that there’s something for everyone. There’s so many genres, so many sub-genres and so much variety even in those sub-genres that if you keep looking, you’re bound to find something you adore.
And you’re free to adore any film you want, whether the fans or critics love or loathe it… but if you want to maintain your image in front of your more discerning film-loving friends, you may want to keep some of your favourites a little quiet.
Whether the film is bad, made for a different audience or caters to a bit of a shameful passion of yours, some movies are better loved in secret.
10. Mamma Mia!
Mamma Mia is the prototypical middle-aged mum’s movie. ABBA is the prototypical middle-aged mum’s music of choice. This movie was made with a very clear audience in mind. And yet, for a lot of people, this film is that ideal kind of guilty pleasure.
You probably grew up hearing a lot of ABBA when you were growing up; you probably didn’t care that much for it. Yet when you watch this movie again, there’s a certain nostalgia to them, they’ve got a catchiness to them you never thought about much.
ABBA’s tracklist is insanely catchy and this movie does them all justice with some amazing musical numbers. Sure, the romance and general story isn’t for everyone, but go in with an open mind and you might enjoy the sense of fun that the film puts out. Just remember to bring the earplugs for Pierce Brosnan’s singing numbers.
